Rashid and Benny made many phone calls and it was determined that a rather big cyclone was headed our way and would come ashore north of our position on Ashwem Beach. So the Meems Team battened down the hatches and pulled in the battered sails (parachutes) and tied down everything possible, and covered the kitchen with tarps.
Then everyone took one last look and went to the places where they would ride out the storm. Some were worried about what they would return to. Maya, Rashid, Imogem, J. R., and Victoria went to the high ground of Meems to an all cement (pukka) building. The Meems Team were all set up in one of the larger huts on the high ground. Many has already evacuated the Ashwem Beach area near Mandrem. Then, everyone waited. And it rained hard and the wind blew, for some hours. But miraculously for Meems Arabian Sea, Cyclone Phyan veered further out to Sea and made land-fall much further north than was first projected. When the sun broke, Maya, Rashid, Imogem, J. R., and Victoria came out and took a walk on the beach finishing up at a beach restaurant where they ate some food and watched the people drying all the fabrics that had been soaked. This video is a small glimpse of that day. Video by J. R. Ransom |
